Sambong mountain

Sambongsan

Many tigers lived in this mountain. Sambong Mountain stands high among Choongcheongbook-do Jecheon-city Baekun-myeon Whadang-li and Duckdong-li. But this mountain is not famous. Because Sambong Mountain is surrounded with Baekun Mountain, Guhak Mountain, Juron Mountain and Cheondeung Mountain, Sipja-bong and this is located at the center of these mountains. Because of this topography, many tigers lived in Sambong Mountain before 50 years ago. There is 'Hosikchong' around 'Neorukgol' at the town of 'Daehoji' which shows the past. 'Hosikchong' is a tomb of Hosikjang and this was the common style of mountain villages in the old times. People were dead because of tigers and other people found ashes of dead people and made tombs by rocks. And then they put steamers at the tombs and put kitchen knife to hole the steamers because they were afraid of revengeful ghosts and they did not wanted to meet ghosts by putting the knife. Hundreds of Hosikchongs are found in Gangwon-do Taebaek-city, Samcheok-gun, Jungsun-gun. But in Baekun-myeon Sambong Mountain, people barely find these Hosikchongs but one Hosikchong was found. But except for remaining Hosikchong among the field of Imbeorukgol and Neorukgol shaped trace of tombs, you can barely find the real shape of Hosikchong.

Towns under Sambong Mountain have unique origin of names. The old name of Whadangli is 'Kkottaengii', and Kkottaengii is still used in topographic map. In old times, lots of ponds were in this place. Kkottaengii was based on ponds which were covered with many flowers. And this name is made by the meaning of 'Imbeorukgol' which means the place of abandoned lover. 'Neorukgol' is based on a 'Large rock'. Meanwhile, Pyeongdong-li which is located at eastern Sambong Mountain is the hometown of 'O-Tak-Beon' who wrote poems and novels about the hometown. This town has abundant crops because this town has fields(farms) different from other towns. Sambong Mountain is connected to Duckdong Valley and Yaksudong Valley.
